Hi all,
I know it's a little more than a month away but I'm already in the horror mood. It's something with fall I guess. Anyways I figured I'd start this topic for those of us, hopefully not just me or I'll be talking to myself a lot, who like horror novels. Basicly discuss what you are reading or have read.
I just finisheed the book Like Death by Tim Waggner on Bookshare. I thought it was not only scary but the story behind it was also good. I'm now reading Salem's Lot by Stephen king and Spirit by Graham Masterton.
This wasn't a work of fictional horror with ghosts or other supernatural beings, but rather, a true account about the life of a female serial killer. The title of the book was Perfect Poison: A Female Serial Killer's Deadly Medicine and was written by M. William Phelps. Her name was Kristen Gilbert and she worked as a nurse in Ledes, Massachusetts at the Vetarans Administration Medical Center. For seven years, she got away with murdering at least four (and possibly up to forty) war veterans there who trusted her to care for them. It's a rather riveting story and the author does an excellent job capturing the story, telling it from many points of view. For me, it was quite horrifying since I am a veteran myself and have a son who works in nursing.
More in line with the Halloween theme, though, is another book I recently read entitled Cell by Stephen King. It came out a few years ago so perhaps it is old news, but it was about a fateful day when everyone who had a cell phone received a call, The Call. Everybody who received the call turned into man-eating and violent beings. The novel is about a group of people who did not possess a cell phone and therefore did not undergo this horrifying transformation. Several of them band together and make their way to a city (Kashwak, Maine) which is out in the boondocks and has not been touched by technologies such as cell phones and computers. Cell is the story of this group's quest to survive. Of course, there is a lot of death and gore along the way but I enjoyed the book and it might be a nice selection to read for Halloween.
